Black Forest Whistles
Made with Passion
Black Forest Station is typical of the open and mountainous terrain of New Zealand, which presents a daunting task for a shepherd attempting to muster many thousands of sheep. However the special relationship that exists between shepherd and his sheep dog enables the job to be accomplished efficiently. The shepherd gives his dog commands using his voice or blowing this doubled-over piece of metal to produce a piercing whistling sound which can be heard from a great distance.

The Black Forest Whistle
Black Forest Station lies on the shores of Lake Benmore in the Mackenzie Country New Zealand, a country named after the legendary James Mackenzie who, together with his sheep dog Friday, was arrested for rustling sheep in 1855. For a number of generations Black Forest has been farmed by the Innes family, and still is to this day.
